To give you a bit of background information, Katie Piper was the victim of an acid attack here in the UK.
Before the attack, Katie Piper was an upcoming model and TV presenter. Then she started dating the wrong guy (which is something of an understatement). When the relationship didn’t work out, the guy arranged for someone to throw acid in Katie’s face.
The book takes the reader through the events leading up to the attack, the attack itself, and then Katie’s road to recovery.
A change of opinion
This book is a TRUE STORY. It’s not been based on a true story, and it’s not had any part of it fabricated or over-dramatized.
The attack that Katie suffered is a completely horrible thing to have to go through, and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. So, for that reason, I don’t want to give the book a bad review, however, I am here to give the book an honest review.
So, I admit that in the first ten pages of the book, I didn’t like the way that Katie came across. I thought she seemed very shallow, vain, and extremely self-obsessed. Overall, the picture I had of Katie was not a pleasant one.
Later in the book, Katie admits that before the attack, her world did revolve around her looks. But she was a model and a TV presenter, and it was her looks that made her income.
However, after reading the whole book, my opinion of Katie changed dramatically, and I now view her as a very inspiring person.
Lessons for all of us
You might think that this is a strange book for me to read and review, and yes, it kind of is.
I usually read books in the categories of business and entrepreneurship, marketing, personal development, etc. and if I do read autobiographies, they tend to be written by successful people in business roles.
But this is a non-fiction book about someone who took an awful event (that was not their fault) and turned it around to create something amazing.
If I put myself in Katie’s shoes and something like that happened to me, I think I would shut myself off from the entire world. I don’t think I would want to help anyone else because I would feel too bitter about what happened to me.
It would be so easy for me to play the victim and for me to blame anyone or anything for my shortcomings.
Katie did the complete opposite.
Because of what happened to her, she wanted to help more people, and she went on to set up a charity. She has brought so much light into the world from such a dark place that she deserves only to be commended.
That, on its own, is very inspiring, and anyone can take something away from that.
My overall thoughts
I don’t want to say that this book is a nice read because, at times, it is difficult to get through. You can’t believe that this event actually happened, and you want it to be a fictional story.
I wish this book didn’t exist. I wish the attack didn’t happen and that it was purely a work of fiction. But I’m glad that Katie had the courage to share her story.
Pick up this book and give it a read; not only will it humble you, but it will inspire you, too.
Have you read “Beautiful”?

A touching true story of how Katie Piper, the victim of an acid attack, overcame a horrific event and got her life back. An easy to read book with photographic inserts. Be prepared to be shocked, humbled, and inspired. Although this is not a business book, there are still life lessons in here for all of us.
