What is Thirst about?

This book revolves around Scott Harrison’s life story – he is the author of the book along with the narrator.

Although I use the words ‘life story’ and I have put this review into the autobiography category of my blog, there is so much more to this tale.

The book details how Scott went from a selfish, self-centered, ‘bit of a dick’, nightclub promoter and how he changed dramatically into the Scott that has a life mission to bring clean water to the world, and how he came to build charity: water.

A word of warning…

If you plan on listening to the audiobook (as I did), please be aware that it is an emotional rollercoaster.

I listen to my audiobooks when I walk my dog early in the morning, and I am so glad that on my early walks I am unlikely to run into another human being because I spent a lot of those mornings sobbing whilst engrossed in this book.

If you have even the smallest amount of compassion in your heart, this book will move you to tears.

I would go as far as to say that if you don’t cry whilst listening to this audiobook, I don’t believe you are human.

But the book isn’t all sad.

Along with the tears, you’ll also experience moments of joy, have your spirits lifted, and your faith in mankind restored.

Just be prepared to experience a huge range of emotions.

Full view

Thirst covers both aspects of business and charity, all wrapped up within Scott’s personal story.

It includes:

  • Scott’s life story from a child up to the present day
  • his time as a nightclub promoter
  • how he lost and regained his faith
  • how he founded a charity
  • how he managed the charity, raised funds, and overcame problems
  • how he dealt with lawsuits, charity regulations, and other hoops that he had to jump through
  • personal stories of his experience in the field
  • …and much more

It’s the full 360-degree perspective including the who, what, where, when, and how.

If you are the entrepreneurial type and you are wanting to extrapolate business lessons from this book, you can, of course, do that.

A lot can be learned from the author. Yes, he is running a charity, but many aspects are identical to that of a business.

charity: water has raised a total of $300 million and has brought clean water to more than 8.2 million people. By any organization standards, business or charity, to turnover that amount of money and to serve that number of people is no easy task and there’s got to be something that you can learn from that!

Would I recommend Thirst?

Yes! Yes! Yes! I would definitely recommend this book.

Obviously, reading the print book will give you a different experience than listening to the audiobook. But after listening to the audiobook, I can confidently say that this book is going to be well worth your time no matter how you digest it.

My overall thoughts

Thirst is a read for anyone; entrepreneur, business owner, employee, CEO, digital nomad, self-employed. Whatever you do for a living, you can benefit from reading this book.

It’s inspiring, motivating, heartbreaking, and every other emotion you can think of all rolled into one.

There are many lessons that you can learn from this book and they come in the shape of life lessons, business lessons, and general ‘how to be a better person’ lessons.

If you read or listen to only one book this year – make it this one.
