Following on from another book authored by Dan Norris, Content Machine, which I read in 2017 (and rated 10/10) I was very interested in reading some of his other books.

After a bit of browsing on Amazon, Create or Hate caught my eye and I added it to my Reading and Review List for 2018.

First impressions

The book is smaller than I expected it to be (only 108 pages), but if you’re a frequent visitor to my blog and YouTube channel you’ll know that I actually prefer this.

I hate reading pages of waffle or feeling as though the author has tried to make their book longer just for the sake of a higher page count.

I much prefer it when the content is kept straight to the point and I can obtain the knowledge and value from the book with the shortest time investment possible.

Creating or hating

The book is based on one simple principle, which is that in order to be successful you must be constantly creating things – whether that be blog posts, videos, products, services, podcasts, books, websites, social media content, etc.

What stops most people from creating and ‘putting things out there’ is the fear of failure, but in this book, Dan likes to call this force Hate.

Create or Hate is designed to help you control and overcome Hate, freeing you up to nurture and grow your creative side.

More about Hate than Create

It’s important to point out that this book is more about controlling the Hate than it is about showing you how to Create.

Although there is a whole section for How to Be Creative, approximately two-thirds of the book is about dis-arming Hate.

But in saying that, I do believe that the fear of failure, or Hate as Dan likes to calls it, is the main reason why people do not create, so he’s probably got the ratios just right. However, if you are looking for a book solely on how to be creative, this probably isn’t going to be the book for you.

My main takeaways

I took away two key points from this book which I constantly try to implement.

One is to create more than I consume, and the other is to aim for a 97% failure rate.

My overall thoughts

Create or Hate is a good book, but it’s not a great book.

It didn’t blow me away but the time that I invested in reading it was not wasted, I still received an adequate amount of value.

It’s easy to read, straight-to-the-point, and you can read the whole thing in one session.

Overall an enjoyable short read that gives you a bit of a kick up the backside to get creating.

Have you read Create or Hate?

This review is my own personal opinion of Create or Hate.
