Gary V! <3

I am a big fan of Gary Vaynerchuk. I love the way he cuts through all the entrepreneurial bullshit and gets straight to the point.

So, as you can imagine, I was very excited when this book arrived!

About “Crush It!”

Although I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of this book, I had no idea what it was about.

The title, ‘Crush It!’, and strapline, ‘Why Now Is The Time To Cash In On Your Passion’, didn’t really tell me an awful lot about the book’s content.

However, after reading it, I can tell you that the book is about how to build a personal brand around your interest and how to monetize it so that you can make a living from doing what you love every day.

The book I was looking for!

Before I got this book, I read and reviewed another personal branding book, Introduction To Personal Branding by Mel Carson, and in short, I hated it.

My video review of that book lasted for over 20 minutes and contained several rants full of reasons why I disliked the book so much.

My main issue with ‘Introduction to Personal Branding’ was that I felt the book teaches you how to turn yourself into something you’re not, rather than taking into account your own uniqueness. In contrast, Vaynerchuk’s book, ‘Crush It!’ contains everything that I wanted.

Vaynerchuk understands that a personal brand needs to be personal, and he advises his readers to identify what they are interested in and what they love doing. The author then educates the reader on how they can build a brand around their passions and interests.

Being authentic and staying true to yourself are BIG key points in ‘Crush It!’

Gary didn’t write this book…

Gary V admits that writing is not his forte but he is an excellent speaker. Therefore, in order to produce this book, he recorded the audio and had it transcribed.

Whoever transcribed it did an excellent job at getting across Vaynerchuk’s passion and character, so much so that you can almost hear him reading the words to you.

A few negatives…

I have two slightly negative comments about the book.

First, I think that the text could have been better laid out. Each page is just one block of text, and I think that breaking up the text would have made the book easier to read and digest.

The layout of the text and spacing make the book difficult to read, and the fonts clash. Overall, it’s not very easy on the eyes.

Secondly, at the time of this review, the book was almost nine years old. So, there are some social media platforms (such as Instagram and Snapchat) that are not included in the book. I am pretty confident that if Vaynerchuk was going to re-write the book again today, both of those platforms would be included.

However, those slight negatives don’t detract from the book’s overall message and ethos.

I still highly rate this book, and I believe that it is a valuable read for anyone wanting to build a personal brand around their passion.

UPDATE: Since reviewing this book, a new version, Crushing It! has been released.

Crush It!

7.7

This book is a little gem all about taking a topic that you love, building a personal brand around it, and then monetizing it. I loved this book, and I would highly recommend it. I wanted to give it top marks, but just a few things let the book down.
