This is a book that I have wanted for a while. I work in the digital marketing world and growth hacker marketing is something that I have heard a lot about over the last 24 months or so.

Because of those reasons, I made sure to grab myself a copy on my last book haul.

I was looking forward to learning more about growth hacker marketing from Ryan Holiday’s point of view and experience.

It’s a quick read

Firstly, this book was a lot smaller than I expected. The main content is only about 70 pages long and I managed to read it in one afternoon.

I’m not complaining about the book being small. On the contrary, I much prefer books this size and if anything, it makes me want to score it higher.

I love books that are straight to the point and that value my time as a reader. They provide me with the hard-hitting facts and information that I am looking for without any extra fluff or waffle.

I dislike it when authors have made their books longer just for the sake of it. From my point of view, that is wasting my time – one of my most valuable and expensive resources.

Therefore, I tend to prefer books like this; ones that I can read in a single afternoon and get instant value out of.

What is Growth Hacker Marketing?

I’m going to quote a quote (yes, you read that right) from the book …

“The end goal of every growth hacker is to build a self-perpetuating marketing machine that reaches millions by itself.” – Aaron Ginn

The idea behind growth marketing is simply being able to reach millions of people by spending no money or very little money.

When you first think of marketing you think of large billboards, magazine advertisements, and expensive TV campaigns. These marketing activities are designed to reach thousands, if not millions, of people.

Say, for example, your new company went online yesterday, you are trying to reach the same size audience but you have a marketing budget of zero.

How do you do it?

The answer to that question is what growth hacker marketing is all about.

You’re essentially trying to create something out of nothing by turning your excited existing users into your own viral marketing force.

About the book

Growth Hacker Marketing gives you a 4-step plan on how to build a growth hack into your own product or service.

This book is not just about acquiring new customers, it also helps you to keep hold of your current customers rather than constantly trying to fill a bucket with a hole in the bottom.

Ryan describes growth hacker marketing as a ‘mindset’ and helps you to develop your own way of thinking.

The book includes a range of different types of growth hacks with examples – some of which you can swipe and implement straight into your own product or service.

In the back of the book, there is a fantastic FAQ section that I believe adds a tonne of value.

My overall thoughts

This is a great book that I would recommend to all marketers – especially those that are trying to market a product or service with an extremely tight, if not zero, marketing budget.

I would also recommend this book to anyone who runs a start-up or thinking of forming a company in the near future. It will help to give you some great ideas on how to build growth hacks into your product/service that will enhance your marketing activities later down the line.
