From the title, ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’, I thought that this might be a book for introverts or those that struggle to make friends. Now, I’ll happily chat with anyone and therefore questioned whether this book was for me.

But as I began reading the book, I realized that there is a lot more to this book than I first thought.

What is “How to Win Friends and Influence People” about?

The book is about how to influence people to come around to your way of thinking.

The book gives advice on how to manage human relationships without applying friction or force.

We all know that business is built on people, not just internally in terms of employees and directors, but also externally in terms of customers and suppliers. Therefore, being able to manage those relationships in a positive way is paramount for your success.

Although this book is very valuable for entrepreneurs, we all have relationships to manage, such as a spouse, family, colleagues, a boss, or even some random person at a customer service checkout. Therefore, this book is useful to anyone.

Content

“How to Win Friends and Influence People” was first published in 1937, but it has been rewritten a few times to bring the examples that it uses up to date.

The book is broken down into numerous principles, and each principle has its own chapter.

The chapters are quite short, which makes it easy to pick up the book and put it down again without losing the book’s flow.

Each chapter contains a few stories. These are fitting examples to help explain the principle in question as well as helping make the book more entertaining to read.

My experience

After reading this book, I confess that I am not the best at dealing with people.

Although I can chat all day, I can often come across accidentally as being rather brash and quite rude. I tend to say what I think, and I don’t have much of a filter.

Because of those reasons, I have learned a lot from this book, and I am glad that I have read it.

Since reading the book, I notice a lot more when witnessing conversations between people, as well as understanding why people react in certain ways.

Overall, I feel as though the book has helped me to become more emotionally intelligent.
