For anyone who has been studying personal development for any length of time, the name Jim Rohn will be very familiar. He is a legend in this area!
Browse the non-fiction bookshelves of Amazon for any length of time, and you’re bound to come across at least one of his books. That said, this is the first one of Jim Rohn’s books that I’ve read, and I am happy to report that it did not disappoint!
But wait a minute …
Although I have a lot of love for this book, there were one or two aspects that I didn’t like.
First of all, I don’t like the design of the book and I don’t like the title. I find it all a bit cliché and cringeworthy. Essentially, it’s just the author’s name and reputation that made me buy this book.
Also, although I do enjoy simple, straight to the point, easy to read books, I think that some of the language in the book is rather childish, and there’s also some questionable grammar!
And lastly, I noticed that some sentences are repeated. Jim Rohn would say one thing in one sentence and then repeating it in the next sentence but in a slightly different way. It all feels rather like Groundhog Day. However, that could be a deliberate ploy to reinforce the message.
First-class personal development advice
BUT, all those negatives aside, the book contains first-class personal development information.
The book is about more than just how to make money. The author also tries to teach you how to create happiness in life. So, although there are several big chapters on financial independence, communication, and time management, which are all important factors of success, the author also gives advice on lifestyle, pleasure, happiness, and heightened self-interest.
Overall, the book provides you with an overall philosophy and stable foundation to keep your compass pointing you in the right direction.
Key takeaways
One of the key takeaways that I took from the book is that you should “design a life.”
Jim Rohn noted that you should “absorb every moment and make mental notes.” I think it’s extremely important to stop and take a moment to enjoy and appreciate everyday things. It’s all too easy to rush through life without appreciating those important things that bring joy to your life.
My favorite quote
My favorite quote from the book is:
“Everyone must suffer one of two pains, the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. My advice is don’t trade discipline for regret. Discipline weighs ounces, whereas regret weighs pounds.”
That’s a brilliant quote that I completely agree with. One of my fears is that I get to the end of my life regretting not taking the opportunities that I had because it required ‘hard work’.
My overall thoughts
This book is first-class personal development content.
It is quite short at just over 100 pages in length, and it has quite a large font, so it’s easy to read the book in just one or two sittings.
I think anyone could get value from this book and I do highly recommend it.

Keys to Success
Although this book has scored an overall respectable score of 7.3 the content of the book is pure first-class! Sadly, the design, layout, and readability of the book bring the score down, otherwise, this would have been an easy 10/10! A timeless book providing a solid foundation for personal development and growth.
