Make Your Bed – Background Information
The book’s author, William H. McRaven, did not originally set out to write a book; he was invited to give a commencement speech at the University of Texas.
McRaven’s speech was based on ten life lessons that had helped him successfully complete his training to become a Navy SEAL, as well as helping him through his 37-year Naval career.
As with all good speeches, McRaven’s ended up on YouTube and immediately went viral. This led to a lot of people contacting him, wanting to know more about his ten life lessons. To help give more background, McRaven decided to publish his life lessons in a book.
WARNING: If you are planning on buying the book then I advise you not to watch his speech in the following video.
I think that you will get much more value and understanding from the speech if you read the book first. But, for your reference, I have embedded the video below.
(The back of the book also contains a full transcript of the author’s speech.)
When I bought the book, I glanced over the reviews left on Amazon by other readers.
One thing I noticed was that some people were using the book as a bedtime story for their children. And, even though this is an adult non-fiction self-help book, I can totally see how the book also works as a bedtime story – and a very valuable one at that!
Each of McRaven’s life lessons has its own chapter. Within that chapter, the author goes into detail to explain what the life lesson means and shares some personal stories and situations where that particular life lesson has helped him.
I would definitely class this book as a quick read. The font is quite large and the spacing is very generous (which is another reason the book works so well as a bedtime story).
I read this book in one sitting, and it was a real page-turner. There were times when I cried as I read some of the touching stories that the author shared from his service in the Navy.
My overall thoughts
It doesn’t matter what age you are, what your walk of life is, what job you do, whether you want to be in the navy, you want to be a SEAL or you don’t, I still think that this book will be super valuable for you.
This book does not take a huge time commitment to complete. But if you compare the time that you invest in reading this book compared with the value that you will take from it, it’s a no-brainer. You have to read this book!
