Correction: I keep saying ‘Outliners’ in the video, instead of ‘Outliers’. For some reason, I just kept reading it that way.

What is Outliers about?

As it says on the front cover, Outliers is the story of success. In other words, what makes someone successful.

Personally, I have always been fascinated with successful people and I love to learn about their journey.

In this book, Malcolm Gladwell looks at the lives of extraordinary people – those that have achieved so much more than everyone else – and he calls these people Outliers.

Gladwell looks at them in various different areas of accomplishment. Examples of people used include business tycoons, software developers, geniuses, pilots, education, and sports.

He delves deep into their life story to try and understand what is it that made them so successful and what allowed them to reach such high levels in their field of expertise.

This is also the book that made famous the concept of 10,000 hours. If you’ve not heard of it, it basically states that in order to be successful at anything you need to devote at least 10,000 hours of work and practice at it first.

No actionable content

With Malcolm’s books, I don’t tend to find any actionable content. Therefore, if you are looking for ‘the step-by-step book to be successful’ this book is not going to give you that.

Instead, Malcolm conducts his own research on success, interviews various different people of interest, and presents his findings in this book about why people become successful. But it is your job to extrapolate your own lessons and work out how they apply to your own journey of success.

My overall thoughts

This is the second book that I have read by Malcolm Gladwell, and I have to say that it is very similar to the first.

Obviously, the content is different but the way that the information has been debated and presented to the reader is very similar.

It’s an interesting book that makes you look at successful people differently and if you have read and enjoyed one of Malcolm Gladwell’s other books, then you are going to enjoy this book also.

Have you read Outliers?

This book review is my personal opinion and experience of the book Outliers.
