I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about sleep.

There’s another book currently making waves called Why We Sleep by Mathew Walker which has been getting rave reviews!

However, I didn’t necessarily want to know why we sleep, I just wanted to know how can I sleep better.

Why get a good night’s sleep?

Although sleep is often overlooked and is one of the first things that is sacrificed in busy lifestyles, it’s actually really important for our health.

Potential consequences for not getting an adequate amount of rest and recovery time include cancer, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, anxiety, burnout, and Alzheimer’s.

However, if you make sure that you are getting a good night’s sleep then you can reap the benefits of an increased mood along with higher levels of motivation, creativity, memory, alertness, and performance.

It really is a no-brainer.

About the book on Amazon…

Before I get into my main review, there are a few points that I would like to discuss first which came up whilst I was shopping for this Sleep book on Amazon.

Firstly, it noted in the Amazon title that this book is a “90-minute read”.

When the book arrived, I set aside 90-minutes one evening believing that I could read the whole book cover to cover. However, in that amount of time, I barely managed to read one-third of the book!

Unless I am an exceptionally slow reader, this book is NOT a 90-minute read.

Secondly, before purchasing the book I checked out the Amazon reviews from other readers.

A comment that came up frequently was the author was said to be name-dropping an awful lot. I prepared myself for this and bought the book anyway.

However, after reading the book, I don’t agree.

Nick Littlehales is an Elite Sports Sleep Coach and has worked with Team Sky Cyclists, Premiership Footballers, and Olympic Gold Medallists and yes, in the first section of the book, the author does list some very famous sports stars that he has worked with. But I don’t believe he is name-dropping, instead, I believe he is simply trying to build his credibility for why readers should listen to him.

After that first section, he hardly mentions anyone else.

About the book: Sleep by Nick Littlehales

Even though this is a small book – in both dimensions and page count – Littlehales moves very quickly through the topics and get’s straight to the point. (A great quality in a book!)

Some of the topics that he covers include:

  • Sleep cycles
  • Early birds and night owls
  • Sleeping positions
  • Mattresses and bedding
  • Room temperature
  • Sleep trackers and sleep apps
  • Jet-lag
  • Working night shifts
  • Sex and sleeping with partners
  • Winter months and shorter days
  • Children and newborns
  • Teenagers

I would argue that he has covered almost any question you would have about how to get a good night’s sleep.

He certainly answered all my questions.

Realist expectations towards sleep

Littlehales understands that you’re not going to be in bed by 9:30pm every night. You may have to work late, or you may be attending a party, having a meal out, or meeting a few friends for some drinks.

This is ok and Littlehales shows you how you can still do these things AND stay on top of your rest and recovery.

His sleep program (called the R90 Program) is able to be modified to suit your lifestyle and current commitments.

Did this book help me sleep better?

I am going to be honest and admit that at the moment of writing this, I have implemented only 5% of Littlehales’ advice. (But that 5% has worked well!!)

If you follow my Instagram or Facebook Page, you’ll know that recently my dog had to undergo a very serious spinal operation.

Although he is recovering well, he is on strict rest and is not allowed to climb stairs, jump on furniture, etc. until he has fully recovered.

We have been unable to go back to my house because he HAS to climb stairs when in that house. So, instead, we have been staying at a friend’s house (in the living room) for the past 4 weeks.

Once my dog gets the all-clear from the vet, then we will be able to go home and I can implement more of Littlehales R90 Program and sleep advice.

But in the meantime, I’m sleeping on the floor in someone’s living room! – Not ideal.

Would I recommend this book?

Yes, I would definitely recommend this book to those that want to know how to get the most out of their rest and recovery time.

The book is full of practical advice that you can implement and modify to suit your own lifestyle.

  1. I have not read Sleep yet, but I have wanted to. Why We Sleep also discusses what you mentioned in this book review on sleep cycles and jet leg. The book also goes over alcohol and how it affects sleeping. I would agree that Why We Sleep goes over the research and science around sleep with no sleep program or little advise on how to get better sleep. Another good book for actionable steps for better sleep is Sleep Smarter by Shawn Stevenson.

      I have improved on my sleep since reading the book Sleep, but as always, there’s room for improvement.
