This was an unplanned listen.

I logged into Amazon Audible to check out the Daily Deal, and for the first time noticed the ‘Free: Audio Shows’ section.

I gave it a click and a quick browse and stumbled upon this audio show, The 3-Day Effect by Florence Williams.

The show is made up of 6 episodes which are about 30 minutes each, totally roughly around 3 hours, and was an ideal show for me to listen to on my walks whilst I waited for my next free audiobook credit from Audible.

What is The 3-Day Effect about?

Florence Williams, author of The Nature Fix and a science journalist, teams up with cognitive neuroscientist, David Strayer, to study the science behind why spending 3 days in nature can boost our overall well-being.

Throughout the show, Williams ventures out into the wild for 3 days with war veterans, suffers from PTSD, sex traffic victims, and even a ‘nature-hater’.

This is done over several trips and they do various activities such as camping, rafting, and hiking.

All the participants are put through a series of tests before and after the trip. Some of the tests are simply measuring bodily function such as heart rate, blood pressure, etc, other tests are mathematical and problem-solving.

It’s a show, not a book

This is the first audio ‘show’ that I have listened to on Audible, and it was refreshing to hear that it was an actual show.

Williams narrates the experiment and explains what is going on, similar to that of a television show host.

The audio then flips back and forth between the narration and ‘real-life’ audio of participants taking part in the activities and sharing their personal thoughts and stories.

I found this multi-level audio very entertaining to listen to, especially when compared to someone simply reading a book to you.

I thought this was a science experiment

When I got to the last episode, David Strayer (the cognitive neuroscientist) was giving the final results of the experiment.

But before he did so, he voiced a small disclaimer that this wasn’t a true science experiment because there wasn’t a control group. (There were some also factors, but I can’t remember what they were)

I found this very disappointing because I wanted true scientific results – it’s why I listened to all 6 episodes of the audio show in the first place – but nonetheless, they were able to show some correlation between the results.

Does nature win?

I’m sure by now you’ve probably assumed that the results after the 3 days in nature were more positive than the results before the 3 days in nature.

…but does that mean that nature wins?

Could you have got the same results if you simply climbed off the hamster wheel for a few days and had a break?

Do you need to spend 3 days camping or could you have spent a few days at a spa or tucked up in bed reading your favorite books?

Do we need a break in nature? Or do we simply need a break from life every now and then?

This is where a true scientific experiment would have triumphed because it would have covered all these variations in different control groups and research, but for now, we just have to settle with the fact that spending 3 days in the wild is good for you.

My overall thoughts

The 3-Day Effect is an entertaining audio show trying to uncover why immersing yourself in nature for 3 days can help reduce your anxiety, boost your creativity, and enhance your overall well-being.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a true science experiment which therefore left me with more questions at the end.
