A question that I’m asked a lot, especially on my Instagram channel, is, “How do you read so many books?”
First of all, I can reassure you that I don’t have any special reading hacks that enable me to get through more books than the average person.
I don’t ‘speed read’ or ‘skim’ through books. I read them just like everyone else does, one page at a time.
I’m not a fast reader. If anything, my reading speed is slower than average.
But I can let you in on the secret of how I manage to read so many books.
What’s my secret?
It’s actually quite an anticlimactic secret!
I simply read little and often.
All I do is read a little bit every day.
Once you get into the habit of digesting a small amount of content every day, you’ll be amazed at just how quickly you will fly through books!
Every morning (weekdays and weekends), I take my dog for a walk, come back and have breakfast, and then settle down to read for an hour or so before getting ready to face the rest of the day.
This hour is my daily reading time.
On top of that, if throughout the day I am feeling stuck in my work – you know, those days when it feels like everything is going wrong? In those cases, I’ll take some time out away from the laptop and go a read instead. That enables me to remain productive while removing myself from something that wasn’t working out. I can then go back to my original work later with a clearer head.
My advice to you
So, if you want to read more books, my advice to you is to simply build good reading habits.
Identify a time in your day when you can sit and read.
You don’t need to read for a long period of time. If it works best for you, read for ten minutes, to begin with, extending that time as you settle into the habit.
Even if you read only 10 pages a day, you’ll easily get through one book every month (possibly two depending on the length of the books).
What do you think?
It’s probably not the ‘big secret’ that you were looking for but I hope you have found it helpful.
