This book was on my 2019 reading list and I was sooo looking forward to reading it.

It’s a very popular book that has received several rave reviews on Instagram.

Also, on the front cover, it boasts being the #1 Business Bestseller in Finance and Entrepreneurship.

So it got to be good, right?

The Sidewalk, The Slowlane, and The Fastlane

The Millionaire Fastlane is broken up into three sections; The Sidewalk, The Slowlane, and The Fastlane.

When I first found this out, I was a little bit annoyed.

I bought the book to learn more about the Fastlane (the clue is in the title!!) why then, is over half of the book taken up by explaining the Sidewalk and the Slowlane?!

I’ll be honest and admit that I was tempted to skip the first two-thirds of the book and head straight for the Fastlane section!

However, I can’t produce a review for a book that I hadn’t fully read, so I turned to page 1 and read it from cover to cover.

After completing the book, I was glad that I read it all and I understood why the author, MJ DeMarco, spent a large proportion of the book detailing the other two routes.

Not only does the Sidewalk and the Slowlane fit in perfectly with his high-speed car racing analogy of the Fastlane, but these sections were also key to understanding the millionaire principles that he was trying to teach.

Yes, you need to know what it is you have to do in order to get into the Fastlane, but you also need to know what to avoid to ensure you don’t end up in one of the other two lanes.

Things such as what not to spend your time on, what not to spend your money on, what not to invest in, what type of businesses to avoid, what type of mindset to avoid, what type of people to avoid etc.

So, even though only one-third of the book is dedicated to teaching you about the Fastlane, the rest of the book is still essential reading in order to understand the concept fully.

The Millionaire Fastlane

MJ DeMarco uses psychology and maths to unlock the secrets of building wealth.

He’s very straight-talking and not scared of sharing his opinion on other books and authors also teaching wealth building techniques.

I actually found this writing style very refreshing, but just be warned that he’s not all soft and fluffy.

Two parts that I found extremely valuable were the Q&A’s and the Commandments.

In the Q&A section, DeMarco overcomes objections (excuses!) from people who are not in the Fastlane and/or who are failing to make it happen.

The Commandments are actually called the ’40 Fastlane Lifestyle Guidelines’ and include things such as;

  • I shall not sell my soul for a weekend.
  • I shall not trade my time for money.
  • I shall not consume first, but produce first and consume later.
  • I shall not build a business, but a brand.
  • Etc.

Both sections are a nice touch and are useful when revisiting the book for a refresh.

My overall thoughts

I got a lot of value out of The Millionaire Fastlane and made a lot of implementation notes in My Book of 100 Books Workbook.

I have read a lot of entrepreneurship books about business, millionaire mindsets, how to build wealth, etc, and this book seems like the most complete package.

A great book that I would highly recommend to all entrepreneurs.

Have you read this book?
