This book has been cited as “The most inspiring book on wealth ever written,” it has sold over two million copies, and it has a rather interesting back story…

Originally, it wasn’t meant to be a book at all. George S. Clason wrote a series of Babylonian parables for banks which were made into pamphlets and handed out to customers. The stories were designed to help teach customers how to better manage their finances.

These parables were a great success and were later combined to create this best-selling book. The most famous parable is that of ‘The Richest Man in Babylon,’ hence where the book gets its title.

Money lessons

There’s some great information contained in this book, including:

  • How to increase your wealth
  • How to control your expenses
  • How to save
  • How to make gold multiply
  • How to secure a future income
  • How to increase your ability to earn
  • How to make profitable investments

These lessons are extremely valuable and also timeless. I wish I had learned them years ago!

Not your typical writing style

One thing to note is that the book is written in an Olde English style.

Here’s an extract from the book to illustrate:

’If I did have two shekels,’ Bansir responded gloomily, ‘to no-one could I lend them – not even to you, my best of friends; for they would be my fortune – my entire fortune. No one lends his entire fortune, not even to his best friend.’

‘What,’ exclaimed Kobbi with genuine surprise. ‘Thou hast not one shekel in thy purse, yet sit like a statue upon a wall! Why not complete that chariot? How else canst thou provide for thy noble appetite? ‘Tis not like thee, my friend. Where is thy endless energy? Doth something distress thee? Have the Gods bought to thee troubles?’”

This writing style is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it makes the book very different and fits in with the Babylonian theme. However, on the other hand, it can make the book somewhat tedious to read at times.

I personally didn’t mind it that much, but it is something to take into consideration if you are thinking about buying this book.

Building wealth SLOWLY

Although this book is a valuable read, that is useful regardless of if you’re an entrepreneur or an employee, it’s important to know that it is not a get-rich-quick scheme.

The book is about building wealth, but it’s about building wealth extremely slowly. If you’re an entrepreneur or business owner, you have more control over your income than you do if you’re an employee. You can still follow the lessons in this book and build wealth, but I also urge you to also follow the lessons in the book “The Millionaire Fastlane” by M J DeMarco.

In that book, the author describes three ways in which you can build wealth and he calls them The Sidewalk, The Slowlane, and The Fastlane. Obviously, you want to be in The Fastlane as that is where you are able to build wealth the quickest.

The Slowlane is comparable to the method of wealth-building that’s described in “The Richest Man In Babylon.” However, if you do have some say in how much income you can generate, The Fastlane is the place to be if you want to enjoy the fruits of your labor before you are too old to fully exploit them.

I personally try to practice the lessons from both books. “The Richest Man in Babylon” provides me with a steady saving and investment structure, whereas “The Millionnaire Fastlane” helps me to light a fire under my earning ability.

My overall thoughts

“The Richest Man in Bablyon” is a great book that I wish I had read sooner. I truly believe that I would be in a better financial position today and I would have avoided many past mistakes if I had done so.

Before I wrap up this review, I want to share my favorite quote from the book with you, which is:

Gold is reserved for those that know its laws and abide by them.”

This book explains those laws, teaches you how to manage your money, and shows you how to make your money work for you.

Everyone needs to read this book!
