If you’re like me, you’ll have a lot of books laying around.
Although most of these books you will want to keep and possibly re-read, you may also have books that you didn’t enjoy, books that you will never read again, or books that you’ve acquired but have no intention of ever reading.
So, why not sell the books you don’t want and make yourself a little extra cash?
That’s what I did via the mobile app WeBuyBooks. And since I happen to have a blog and YouTube Channel about books, I thought it would be a good idea to let you guys know how I got on with the process.
WeBuyBooks allows you to swap your books, CDs, DVDs, and games for cash.
Personally, I used the mobile app (which is the process that I’m reviewing) but I believe that you can also use their services via their website, webuybooks.co.uk
Now, before we get into the nitty-gritty, you should know that this is a U.K.-based company, so this app/website is not available to you if you’re based anywhere else in the world.
However, with a bit of searching, you should be able to find a similar service in your location.
The WeBuyBook process
So, here’s how the process works via the app.
- Start by downloading the app (obviously).
- Now, using the barcode scanner in the app, scan the barcode on the books that you want to get rid of.
- Once you’ve finished scanning, you’ll be given a list, showing you how much WeBuyBooks is willing to pay you for each individual book, and then you’re given a total price.
- At this point, you need to decide whether you want to accept that price or not. You can remove books from the list if the price the company is offering is lower than what you are happy to accept.
In my experience, I found the prices offered for the books to be quite fair.
Once you’re happy with the list of books you want to sell and the prices offered, simply click on “sell books.”
You will then be given a shipping label.
Postage is free of charge, so you don’t have to pay to send the books to them. This is a very big benefit, especially when you consider the size and weight of a stack of books!
Once you have the shipping label, you have two options:
- If you have a printer, you can print the label off at home.
- If you don’t have a printer, you can request that the company sends you a printed copy of the shipping label. (Again, this is free of charge.)
When you have your shipping label, simply fix it to your box of books.
Now, you have two more options:
- You can opt for someone to come and collect the box from your home or work address.
- Or, you can choose to drop the box at a local drop-off point if that’s more convenient for you.
Once I had scanned, boxed, labeled, and posted my box, I waited.
After a couple of days, I’d heard nothing from the company. I waited another week and still, there was nothing, and I was beginning to wonder when I would receive my payment.
So, I tried to go onto the app to see if there were any tracking or update information, but the app didn’t seem to be working. I tried the website, but it was completely down, and I was presented with an error message.
Eventually, I managed to contact the company via their Facebook Page. A helpful customer service assistant explained that they were having technical issues which did mean that their app and website were temporarily out of order, but they had received my box of books and I should receive an email shortly.
The next day, the email arrived telling me that they had received my books and that I would receive payment after they had checked the contents of my box.
Another couple of days passed and I still hadn’t received my payment. The website was still down, and the app wasn’t working!
So, I chased the company again via Facebook who assured me that payment was on the way.
The company’s customer service representatives were very pleasant and helpful, which was reassuring, as I had started to worry at that point that I was being scammed!
A couple of days later, I finally received payment into my account.
My overall thoughts
Overall, the process was quite simple, and I did receive a fair price for my books.
However, the time I spent chasing and querying my payment probably outweighed the value of the sale.
BUT, if WeBuyBooks were not experiencing technical problems at the same time as I was trying to review their service, the process would probably have been much smoother and much quicker.
That said, the problems I experienced did allow me to check out how the company’s customer service department handled technical difficulties, and I was impressed. The customer service department was very friendly, very helpful, and very timely in their response to my query.
So, would I use the company again?
Yes, I would.
Tips when selling your books via WeBuyBooks
Try to have a reasonable quantity of books to sell, rather than just a few. This makes the effort of going through the scanning, boxing, and postage process much more worthwhile.
You should be aware that the company doesn’t accept every book.
So, if you have books that don’t fall within the company’s remit or perhaps are very old, and the company doesn’t think that they will be able to sell them, your books may be rejected at the scanning stage.
I noticed that it was the books that were published within the last couple of years that achieved the best prices.
The older books, especially the really old non-fiction books, achieved the lowest prices.
